Old Salem Museum and Gardens

In 1950, a group of dedicated volunteers established Old Salem, Inc. as a way to begin preserving and restoring the town of Salem for future generations. In 2006, Old Salem changed its name to Old Salem Museums & Gardens – to better reflect the increasing importance of the garden program and to clearly distinguish that there are multiple experiences available within the Old Salem district. As Old Salem grew, more buildings were restored and new facilities were added. The Old Salem Visitor Center is the perfect location for large meetings, receptions, weddings parties, or dinners. The capacity of the James A. Gray, Jr. Auditorium is approximately 200 for Reception/Conference events. For evening events, the entire Visitor Center is available and can comfortably hold up to 700 guests.

Dr. Maya Angelou holds her week long annual Thanksgiving “Friends and Family” events at Old Salem. We have catered and handled the bar service these events for many years. We are the preferred caterer and culinary consultant for Dr. Maya Angelou. Click here for photos.

Tanglewood is rich in history, beauty, and southern charm. Tanglewood’s story lies not only beneath the surface, but can be experienced as an ongoing living process. The property now known as Tanglewood Park was part of land claimed by Sr. Walter Raleigh for Queen Elizabeth on March 25, 1584. In 1951, the Reynolds willed the Tanglewood property to the citizens of Forsyth County to share as a public recreational park. The Reynolds willed the property as a gesture to have others benefit from the beauty, elegance, history, and recreation their country estate had to offer. Thus, Tanglewood Park was born. The public recreational facility is owned by Forsyth County. Today, the Manor House is a Bed & Breakfast Inn with ten guest rooms, sweeping staircases, the Trophy Room, 20’s Room, and Rock Fireplace Room. These facilities are used for weddings, meetings, and overnight accommodations.

The Barn is a Tanglewood landmark. This beautifully redesigned barn can comfortably hold several hundred guests. The Barn features an authentic exterior and is complemented by modern interior features. The Barn is ideal for any groups get together. The Arboretum and Gardens features twenty-six spectacular gardens that showcase seasonal flowers, ornamental shrubs, and a wide variety of trees native to the area. The Arboretum and Gardens at Tanglewood is one of the most beautiful outdoor attractions in Forsyth County. The gardens also provide an enchanting and picturesque setting for weddings, receptions, and community gatherings throughout the year.

The Shaffner House

The Shaffner House is principally an events and conference center that also happens to boast nine uniquely-themed guest rooms. It’s only run like a traditional B&B during big-event weekends, such as college graduations. Each room, with its own personality and décor, has been carefully planned, decorated, and then named for a particular part of Winston-Salem’s rich history. It took nearly two years to achieve the grandeur that you see today and it was officially opened on September 1, 1992. Since then, it has appeared in various publications including Southern Living, hosted a myriad of conferences and galas, and has been a part of many wedding day dreams. The 104-year-old home is rarely empty. It hosts birthday parties, anniversary dinners, corporate groups, and lots of weddings. In fact, many couples rent the entire house for a weekend and hold everything from the rehearsal dinner to the wedding reception to the wedding itself in the home.
